2023 HtC Trucker Poll
Introducing the first Trucker Poll at How to Commute! There are certain questions that I think are worth visiting, so I can slowly accrue the wisdom and experience of readers and travelers to the blog.
I will be positing questions relevant to CDL holders of all kinds, not necessarily the “truckers” that lots of people think of when they see or hear that word. If your CDL is the basis for your income or was within the past three years, consider this poll open to you. It will remain open until I create another poll, so I would expect about one year from today.
These questions will be up without a time limit; A) this is a minuscule blog, and B) it will take time to gather up the answers anyway. I currently plan on closing the poll when I start the next survey this time next year.
Answer honestly, and please keep in mind this is intended to help people make decisions about their lives and careers. Be good. Don’t try to game the system or push the response pool in a political direction. I want to help give others (and myself!) some guidance and want just honest responses.
The comment section is open, but I expect people to be their best selves and criticize appropriately or offer negative experiences like adults. The general internet rule of thumb, “If you have to ask if it breaks the rules/social contract then it’s probably not worth posting here,” does apply. I have plenty of negative experiences to share, too, and there are constructive ways to do that as opposed to dumping on your recruiter or the first company that you worked for. Have at it!
Thank you!
I’m open to criticism on this poll! I worked to appear neutral and make the questions and provided responses feel neutral. Please let me know if you feel I struck the mark or missed somehow, bonus points if you can point out a way to correct my mistake.
Thought of a question? Think I could fine-tune a question or its responses? Email me at howtocommute@substack.com. If I think it makes sense, I can always edit this post or stow the idea away for a future survey.
Thanks for participating, and have a good week. Explode safely out there.
(Here’s a little behind the scenes info. Feel free to skip this and go on about your day, it’s really just some minutiae about Substack polls.)
Substack polls can be set to various short time periods, from one hour at the shortest to one week at the longest, after which it goes to “forever”. So, these questions are all set to “forever” since I can’t manually set them to one year. You get to add between two and five selectable responses. The responses have to be 35 characters or less, including any punctuation.
The poll questions automatically set to “Hide the total vote count from readers”, which I’m leaving checked so as to obscure that detail. People can be funny with numbers and I would rather err on the side of protecting the poll, even on something that I perceive as a pretty minor/obscure threat (I may have given you the idea that I take safety seriously). I will post the total vote counts once the poll closes in a year (do remind me if I forget to do so).
Anyway, have a good’un.
